- Riyadh: Arabic first, English as fallback.
- Dubai: English first, with Arabic, Hindi, Urdu and Russian on detection.
- Doha: genuinely bilingual. Arabic for nationals and government-adjacent business, English for expatriate professionals.
- Gulf dialect for sales, Modern Standard Arabic for notifications. Getting this backwards costs you replies.
Why Modern Standard Arabic can hurt you
Modern Standard Arabic reads as formal and institutional. That is exactly right for a bank notification, a contract reminder or an official announcement. It is exactly wrong for a broker or an advisor trying to build enough rapport to get someone to a meeting.
Gulf dialect reads as human. In a sales conversation, that difference matters more than almost any other content decision you will make in this market.
Machine translation is spotted immediately
A translated template is recognisable within one line, and the reply rate collapses. It is not a matter of grammar. The register, the greeting and the level of formality are all subtly wrong, and a native reader notices instantly.
If you have existing Arabic conversations, train on those: your team already knows the right register. If you have none, build the first version with a native speaker rather than guessing, and iterate on real replies.
Code-switching is normal, plan for it
A great deal of Gulf business happens in a mix of Arabic and English inside the same thread, sometimes the same sentence. An agent that forces one language loses part of the conversation. Ours replies in whichever the contact last used and switches when they do.
The languages people forget
Dubai and Doha have large South Asian populations. Depending on your sector, Hindi, Urdu, Malayalam and Tagalog are not edge cases, they are a meaningful share of your pipeline. Russian matters in Dubai real estate and luxury retail specifically.
Frequently asked questions
Should our website be in Arabic too?
For Saudi Arabia, it helps considerably, and a real share of B2B search there happens in Arabic. Write it with a native speaker: unreviewed Arabic on a sales page damages credibility faster than having no Arabic at all.
Can one AI agent handle several languages?
Yes. It detects the language of the incoming message and replies in it, including switching mid-thread. You can also pin a language per campaign if you would rather control it.
Does English-only work in Dubai?
It works, but it leaks. A meaningful part of the pipeline in most consumer sectors is not comfortable in English, and those people quietly do not reply rather than telling you why.
